The following photos are only a sample of species of fish caught near the southern end of the Indian River and sizes of the fish are typical of those inhabiting the flats. For proper perspective, the length from the butt to the end of the cork on the fly rod seen in these pictures measures 14 inches.

If you believe all you hear on fishing shows and read in the fishing magazines, you are in for a rude awakening! Not all saltwater fish weigh 10 lbs or more and do not need to be taken on heavy fly fishing gear. In many cases a six weight outfit will suffice. It isn't the size of salt water fish that is so impressive. It's the diversity, fight and the uncertainty of what one might catch.. You can be hook a 16 inch snook one day and turn around and hook one over 40 inches the next day. There is one constant when fishing the Indian River, " if it swims, it can be taken on a fly rod!"
