The following books are used as
reference material for
. One problem with many fly fishing books is the quality of
photographs. Pictures are often distorted. In addition, black
and white photos printed on lower quality paper help to keep
book costs down but don't provide optimal clarity necessary
to appreciate specific details. Be sure to review any book if
possible before making a purchase.

McClane, A.J., 1978
New York, New York: Henry Holt and
Company (Rev 2/06)

If you are seeking a book on fish identification do not
overlook McClane's Field Guide to Saltwater Fishes. The
color plates are clear and the descriptions of various
species are easy to understand. This book will hold its own
against more recent books on the same subject. It lists for
$20.00 and is readily available in major bookstores.

Ross, David, A., 2000
Mechanicsburg, PA: Stackpole Books (Rev 2/06)

The author is an oceanographer by trade and a fly fisher by
choice. Ross is a regular contributor to The American
Angler. His book on marine science through the eye of a
professional and a heart of a fly fisher makes quality
reading. For those who desire a more in-depth look at the
marine environment, tides currents and waves,
characteristics of salt water fish, fish senses and
behavior, this book is the ticket. It is available for
$19.95 at all major bookstores.

Kreh, Lefty, B., 2003. Third Revised
and fully Augmented Edition
Guilford, CT: The Lyons Press (Rev 4/06)

This book was first published in 1986. It is the standard to
which new books on the same subject are compared. The book
contains a wealth of information on fishing techniques,
tackle and flies for all types of salt water fishing. I had
hoped this third edition would have included more recent
photos and descriptions of up to date equipment. Even so,
the book is a still a good general reference. The book lists
for $19.95 and is available through all major book chains.

Earnhardt, Tom., 1995. Revised and
Updated
New York, NY: The Lyons Press. (Rev 4/06)

This book is well written and a great source of basic
materials. Although it has been ten years since the last
revision, Earnhardt's book with the exception of equipment
is still current. The author writes in an easy to read style
and does digress with non-essential materials. I highly
recommend the book. It lists for $22.95 and is widely
available.

Dave is a FFF certified master casting instructor. His
spiral bound text describes the process of learning to cast
a fly rod and uses simple, effective teaching methods
designed for in the house and the back yard. Some of
his casting tools are great! The book is inexpensive,
$10.00 and may be ordered through him at

this book.

Brown, Mac, 1997, First Edition
Bryson City, N.C., Highland Press (Rev 7/06)

If you want a book on the science of
casting and casting strokes this book is for you. Mac
teaches casting at Western Carolina University and his soft
cover text reads like a text book. Not bad if you are
interested in the physical elements that make up the cast and
the research answering why a casting stroke does
what it does. I frequently go to this book when I have a
technical question that cannot be answered by a standard casting
text. The book is available through Amazon for around
$35.00. |
